How to Answer Short Answer Questions...
The key to answering a short answer question is to first restate the question. What do I mean by that? Ok, I am going to show you an example of what I mean by “restating the question”:
Question: What are the three major predators of kangaroos?
Correctly stated answer: The three major predators of kangaroos are people, dingoes, and crocodiles.
Incorrectly stated answer: People, dingoes, and crocodiles.
Your answers should be expressed as complete sentences, but also give some sort of context for their existence. Think about it this way, if a stranger picked up your work (as strangers are wont to do), he or she should be able to understand the initial question by reading your answer. “People, dingoes, and crocodiles,” by itself, could be the answer to countless questions, such as “What are three species that should never be locked in a room together?”
To answer an open-ended question or short-answer question make sure you have all of the following components:
1. Read the entire question carefully. Does it have more than one part? If so answer them in the order they are asked.
2. Think about what the question is asking you and where you can find the answer in the passage. Or maybe this is an inferential question where you need to combine the clues the author gives you with what you already know.
3. Use the question stem in your answer, use complete sentences, and be sure to include the evidence (details and examples) from the passage.
4. Reread the question, then reread your answer to make sure you have answered the question completely and that your answer makes sense.
5. Check to see if you have capitals where needed, and your spelling and punctuation are corrrect.
